縄文時代から食べられている海藻には、ビタミン類やミネラル類をはじめ、フコイダンやフコキサンチン、食物繊維など様々な栄養素が豊富に含まれています。
近年は日本だけでなく、欧米などの海外でも海藻の豊富な栄養素が注目され、サプリメントやシャンプーなどに幅広く利用されています。
